Mike Hart

Mike came from an environment shaped by instability and addiction. He began using substances at a young age and spent years battling the consequences—legal issues, emotional turmoil, and the belief that he might never escape the cycle.  Mike’s turning point came when a jail sentence led him to treatment, where he was introduced to the tools of recovery. He experienced a profound inner shift and committed himself fully to a new path. Today, he is a living example that healing is always possible—even after years of struggle.

Elyse Hart

Elyse Hart, Mike’s wife and Director of Operations, brings her own powerful story to the mission. Like Mike, Elyse also struggled with addiction. Her battle with drugs and alcohol led her down a dark and difficult path, but recovery gave her a second chance—and she took it with both hands. Elyse and Mike met in recovery, grew through the process together, and now stand side by side—both in marriage and in their work.

    Frequently Asked Questions

    What is a sober companion?

A sober companion is a recovery support professional who provides one-on-one guidance, accountability, and structure for individuals in early recovery or during high-risk transitions. Sober companions help bridge the gap between treatment and real life by offering consistent support, relapse-prevention strategies, and presence during vulnerable moments.

Who can benefit from sober companion services?

Sober companion services can benefit individuals newly sober, those transitioning out of treatment, people experiencing repeated relapse, professionals requiring discretion, and families seeking structured support for a loved one. Services are customized to each individual’s needs and circumstances.

What makes True North different from other recovery support businesses?

With 27 years of combined sobriety, the Harts are the barrier between you or your loved one and the next bad decision. What sets True North apart is lived experience, personalized care, and unwavering accountability. Our niche is simple and intentional—we genuinely care. We provide thoughtful, real-world solutions rooted in recovery, not gimmicks or trends.

Is True North a clinical form of treatment?

No. True North is not a clinical or medical treatment provider. We do not diagnose, prescribe, or replace licensed professionals. We work alongside therapists, treatment centers, and clinicians to reinforce recovery in everyday life.

Why is True North a necessary part of recovery if it is not clinical treatment?

True North exists in the space where treatment ends and real life begins. While we are not a clinical form of treatment, we provide the daily structure and accountability many individuals need once formal treatment becomes less frequent. Recovery is sustained through everyday decisions, routines, and moments of vulnerability. We support individuals by translating recovery tools into real life, offering accountability during high-risk moments, and accompanying clients through the fragile first days and transitions of recovery. We recognize that not every lifestyle allows for extended in-person treatment, and we meet individuals where they are to help build a durable foundation for long-term sobriety.

Why is True North important for families if it is not clinical treatment?

For families, recovery can feel uncertain and overwhelming. True North provides consistent oversight, clear boundaries, and peace of mind during vulnerable stages of recovery. While we are not a clinical provider, we serve as a stabilizing presence—helping families reduce uncertainty, avoid enabling, and regain trust as recovery takes hold.

How much do True North’s services cost?

The cost of services at True North is determined on a case-by-case basis. Recovery is not one-size-fits-all, and neither is our approach. We take time to understand each individual’s needs, level of risk, lifestyle considerations, and duration of support. Our goal is to create an effective, realistic plan focused on long-term outcomes. Pricing is discussed transparently during a confidential consultation.

    How do we get started?

Getting started begins with a confidential consultation. During this conversation, we assess needs, goals, and the appropriate level of support in order to create a personalized recovery plan aligned with each client’s unique situation.
